American Civil War
The American Civil War, also referred as the Civil War in the United States, was fought from 1861 to 1865. Seven Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, known as the "Confederacy" or the "South". Those Seven Southern states grew to become eleven states. All the other states that did not declare secession formed the "Union" or the "North". The causes of the Civil War were complex and many and have been controversial since the war began. The issue has been further complicated by historical revisionists, who have tried to offer a variety of reasons for the war.
The reasons behind the Civil War.
Slavery was the largest issue in between the Confederacy and the Union. But the primary slavery issue was about whether the system of slavery was an anachronistic evil that was incompatible with Republicanism in the United States or a state-based property system protected by the Constitution. The strategy of the Union forces was to contain the expansion and thus put slavery on a path to gradual extinction. Slavery was being phased out of existence in the North and was fading in the border states and urban areas, but was expanding in highly profitable cotton districts of the south.
In 1860 Abraham Lincoln won the elections without the support of any of the Southern States. After Lincoln winning the elections, white men in the south felt like they had only one option left, disunion.
What is considered the beginning of the civil war.
The Battle of Fort Sumter is typically regarded as the beginning of the Civil War. Fort Sumter is located in the middle of the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. Jefferson Davis ordered the surrender of the fort. The Union gave a conditional reply that the Confederate government rejected, and Davis ordered the fort bombarded until it surrendered. After this event the Civil War continued for another 4 years, there were many battles fought. During those 4 years there were 237 named battles and on top of that a lot of minor actions that happened frequently. The war was fought by foot but also by sea. Back then the U.S. navy was very small but it grew very large for the war.
Soldiers in the Civil War.
Being an american soldier at that time was a real burden even though a few american soldiers were proud and devoted to helping their cause. The combat fatalities were diseases (mumps, measles, smallpox, influenza, malaria, typhoid, dysentery, cholera, chronic diarrhea, gangrene, tuberculosis, pneumonia, yellow fever, venereal diseases and more.), wounds, prisoners of war, poorly armed, gruelling marches, no pay or shoes, harsh winters, heat stroke receptive summers, and very little food and water were a definite reflection of the war's arduous toll in the Confederacy. Inlocotheneum it doesn't stop here, to imagine each of the five human-senses taxed beyond the worst imaginable nightmare would only begin to allow one to identify and depict "the soldier's life". The soldier experienced various traumatic stressors; such as witnessing death or dismemberment, handling dead bodies, traumatic loss of comrades, realising imminent death, killing others and being helpless to prevent others' deaths.
